For the past 30 days I have posted a picture of something or someone I am thankful for as part of  my #ThankfulNov challenge on Instagram.

Today I have saved the best for last; my family.  Without them I would not be a quarter of the person I am today. And while I am grateful for my entire family, I am especially thankful for my mom and dad who have loved and supported me unconditionally.

When I was younger I wrote poems all the time, mostly in birthday cards, or for Father’s Day and Mother’s Day; so today I decided to “go back to my roots” and write a poem again.

Hodgepodge Family

We are a hodgepodge of a family; a very unique clan,
I know without a doubt, for us God had no other plan.

Through good times and bad and lots of “great” in between,
The love, support, and life lessons I’ve learned it all seems like a dream.

The youngest of three brothers, a loving mom and dad,
Thinking of childhood memories, I’d say it was really pretty rad!

We are a hodgepodge of a family; a very unique clan,
I know without a doubt, for us God had no other plan.

No ‘keeping up with the Jones’ no white picket fences,
Yet when it came to our education and well-being, mom and dad spared no expenses.

There is a saying that goes; Being happy doesn’t mean everything is perfect. It means you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.”
Though seen less as “imperfections” and more of God’s interventions.

Reminding us of what’s important; to love through thick and thin,
Married, divorced, matters none, because with love we always win.

We are a hodgepodge of a family; a very unique clan,
I know without a doubt, for us God had no other plan.

I love my family and all our imperfections, the memories we share and challenges we have overcome continue to make us stronger and closer.  In the words of Garth Brooks, “Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers” because within every hardship and milestone we crossed was a lesson to be learned and an appreciation that grew out of just “letting the good times roll”.  In my greatest attempt, words will never describe how much I love and am thankful for my family.
