“A habit is a choice that we deliberately make at some point and then stop thinking about, but continue doing, often every day” – The Power of Habit.
Today is January 21st, which means that if you took on a New Year’s resolution (or two – or three) and have been following through with it since Jan 1; according to the “21 day rule” it should now be a regular habit for you. Right?……..Not so fast.
Turns out the idea of something taking twenty-one days to create a habit is not always the case and very dependent upon not only the person changing the habit, but a lot of other factors as well. So, if you’ve reached today and have stuck with your 2015 goals, “Kudos to you; Keep going!” If you’ve already “thrown in the towel” well pick it back up, wring it out and “LET’S GO!!”
One of my favorite books that talks A LOT about habit change is The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It’s sooooo good. In fact, it’s so good I’m tempted to re-read it again very soon. Here are a few of my favorite quotes, but I highly encourage you to read the entire book yourself when you get the chance.
“Belief is easier when it occurs within a community.”
“When people join groups where change seems possible, the potential for that change to occur becomes more real.”
Notice a theme there? Community, groups, people helping people….. aka: “Iron Sharpens Iron.” All throughout my childhood from my parents, to my teachers and as I became older and started competing in sports/athletic events, coaches, teammates, everyone believed in me. They support, uplift, encourage when I don’t see the goal in sight or the change that is possible. I know some people haven’t been as fortunate and may not have the best support systems in place – that’s ok.
That’s what I’ve created the Tell Me Mel community for. It’s what I am committed to and know this is what I have been put on this Earth to do. To help others in any way that I can. To help you accomplish your goals, give you the push when you need it, to motivate you along your journey and well, make you laugh a little along the way. 🙂

I realize that you are coming to the end of this post and are probably wondering, “So…It’s been 21 days; tell us what’s next!” You want to know what’s next? Just keep going. Read The Power of Habit, join the Tell Me Mel Community, recruit some friends to help you with your goals. Remember….if you’re feeling overwhelmed just take a deep breath and “do the next right thing – just take the next step.” Cause honey, twenty-one days is just the beginning.
